The number of beetle and butterfly species here is nothing short of astounding, possibly the greatest diversity for any one ecosystem on the planet. Many, many of them have yet to be cataloged by science. Here are a few of the more colorful and interesting encounters this week. Beetles are of course a bit easier to photograph than are nervous butterflies 🙂
Came across this pretty girl in one of the narrow back streets of Cusco, Peru. Here there are lots of loose dogs running around. Amazingly they all look pretty fat and healthy – possibly feeding on the carcasses of tourists that have fallen down any of the many steep stone steps. This little bitch has puppies somewhere, obvious from the look of her plump double Ds.
